The aim of this study is to put together a critical assessment of Shakespearean scholarship in twentieth-century China with a special focus on the dominant political ideology that controls the production of such scholarship. The study presents a comprehensive, historical evaluation of the scholarship in general and clarifies the nature of Shakespeare study in modern China through an in-depth examination of the critical reception of Hamlet in particular.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The dissertation is divided into five main sections. Introduction focuses on the political ideology from the 1940s to the 1970s when Mao Zedong's de facto literary bible, Talks at the Yenan Forum on Literature and Art, clearly dominated literary studies in China. Chapter One, a comprehensive examination of the changing attitudes of Chinese reception of Shakespeare in the twentieth century, is divided into three chronological sections, each representing a new political era: Early Encounters (1900-1949), Admiration and Attack (1949-early 1980s), and Modernization and Modification (1980s-present). Chapter Two addresses the issue of Hamlet criticism in China through a critical analysis of some of the published scholarship on the play. Conclusion sums up the problems with the Chinese scholarship and reaffirms the optimistic prognosis of Shakespeare study in China beyond the 1990s. An appendix, "Shakespeare In China: A Selected Bibliography," concludes the study.
