Tang chuanqi are a form of literature written by and for the educated elite of Tang dynasty China. There are various ways of subdividing Tang chuanqi. One is to draw a distinction between zhiguai (records of the supernatural) and zhiren (records of extraordinary people). The former represent a continuation of the Six Dynasties zhiguai tradition. While the latter also have roots in the Six dynasties period, they are more of a Tang phenomenon. These Tang zhiren works deal primarily with human situations and exhibit less concern with the purely supernatural. This study focusses on chuanqi of the zhiren type, specifically those that deal with figures embodying qualities of "otherness.".Subjects--Topical Terms:

This notion of "otherness" has two levels of meaning. To the Tang elite who composed these chuanqi, their subjects are "other" in terms of social status: they are women, servants, foreigners, merchants, courtesans, and xia (so-called "knights-errant," both male and female) having Buddhist or Taoist affiliations. And in presenting the life stories of these social "others," Tang writers suggest the existence of means of self-realization, demonstrated by their subjects, that are "other" to the normal lifestyle of the Tang elite.

This study views Tang chuanqi in a Chinese context. They are not, as it is usually the case, understood as fiction here, but rather as biographies. The historical and cultural context supports this approach even though such accounts sometimes contain supernatural or fantastic elements that make them seem fictional today. What is most significant about the pieces selected for study here is the almost revolutionary effort to write biographies on behalf of figures who would otherwise be consigned to oblivion and the attempt in some cases to legitimate and justify their unconventional behavior. Whom did the chuanqi authors write about and why? How did they deal with their subjects? What did they see in them as being extraordinary or valuable in an unconventional way? These are some of the questions this study tries to answer.

This study also suggests that there is a nearly unique relationship between the Tang biographers and their subjects. Social and professional expectations operated to restrict the freedom of Tang literati and officials. Thus, writing about unconventional ways of self-realization offered chuanqi authors the means to experience vicariously various heroic or extraordinary modes of action and existence.
