This study attempts to examine the determinants of job satisfaction in Taiwan, Republic of China, from the perspectives of the individual characteristics, job-related variables and work values. In addition, three measures of job satisfaction--overall job satisfaction, facet-specific satisfaction and the weighted job satisfaction index--are employed to compare the differences in the sources of job satisfaction. The individual characteristics are age, gender, marital status and education. The job-related variables are occupation, industry, the nature and size of firm, retirement program, income and service length.Subjects--Topical Terms:

It is found that the job-related variables are more important predictors to job satisfaction than the individual characteristics when work values are controlled. Regardless of diverse models, satisfaction with job protection has the largest R value. Overall job satisfaction has a larger R value than the rest of other measures of job satisfaction.

Consistent findings pertaining to the sources of job satisfaction measured in three ways are obtained. When work values are controlled, age and gender are positively related to job satisfaction.

All the job-related variables with the exception of service length are significant to all measures of job satisfaction. Professional workers, clerical workers and sales workers are more satisfied than production laborers. Workers in transportation, storage, and communication industries are less satisfied than workers in the public administration, social and personal services sectors regardless of the measure of job satisfaction. Workers in private firms are less satisfied than their counterparts in public organizations in terms of a global measure and weighted measure of job satisfaction. Based on the facet-specific satisfaction, workers in private firms are more satisfied with their promotion. Retirement program and income are positively related to job satisfaction.
