This dissertation addresses aspects of the (re-)production, distribution, reception, and transmission of the canonical texts in the course of Choso&caron;n Korea (1392--1910), particularly, their popularized and/or secularized versions that were (re-)produced for the edification of common people. It highlights the historical significance of how the Choso&caron;n court published the Neo-Confucian didactic work Samgang haengsilto ( Proper Conduct for the Three Bonds with Illustrations, 1432 onward). In addition to the Hyoja (Filial Child) and the Ch'ungsin (Loyal Vassal), the court also compiled the female virtue-focused Yo&caron;llyo&caron; (Virtuous Women) and gave unprecedented attention to the ways in which women should embody filial piety, specifically, the daughter-in-law who should be filial only to her marital/agnatic ancestors and parents.

520 $a In addition, the court published or supported publication of the Pumo u&caron;njunggyo&caron;ng (Sutra on Honoring Parental Love, circa. 10th cen.), even though it officially prohibited the performance of all Buddhist practices. This Buddhist Sutra, the second most circulated sutra in Choso&caron;n society, exclusively represented the mother figure in arguing for the necessity of children's embodiment of filial piety. In this context, women were the mothers of sons, but not of daughters, and were represented as the objects who should be served with filial piety.
520 $a Thus, the bifurcated yet parallel representations of the Neo-Confucian Yo&caron;llyo&caron; or the Samgang Haengsilto and the Buddhist Pumo u&caron;njunggyo&caron;ng of the female figures, between the subject and the object of filial piety, illuminate how filial piety was reassessed and adapted or appropriated along with loyalty and chastity, according to the Choso&caron;n context; how the understandings of the "inside of home" (nei in Chinese), the "outside of home" (wei), and the relationship between the two were reorganized concurrently; how the (Neo-)Confucian and (Mahayana) Buddhist ideas and ideals of filial piety pivoted around actual and ideal ways of internalizing and externalizing patrilineality and/or patriarchy; and how their practices, either collaboratively or competitively, instilled their respective understandings of filial piety into the (re-) establishment of women's roles, marriage rites, and the kinship system in the Choso&caron;n.
