Procedures. Implementation of this design involved five steps as follows: (1) Alternative assigning of students to classes followed by random assignment of classes to experimental and comparison groups. (2) Before any treatment occurs, comparing both the experimental and comparison group performance on an automotive knowledge pretest. (3) The experimental group received a year long treatment consisting of self-learning enhanced, competency-based automotive instruction. The comparison group received traditional, teacher-led, instruction. (4) After their treatments, both of the two groups were post tested using the same criterion measures, a psychomotor skills examination and cognitive test. (5) The experimental group's opinion as to the self-learning approach and materials was assessed using a course evaluation instrument.

Findings. Student achievement scores on cognitive and psychomotor tests were examined for experimental and comparison groups. Both cognitive and psychomotor achievement as well as the correlation coefficient between them were significant at the.001 level of significance.

Conclusions. The findings of this investigation revealed that a significant difference existed between the treatment and comparison groups on posttest cognitive and psychomotor scores. This study concluded that not only was self-learning effective but that it was an appropriate method for Taiwan's vocational education. It was also concluded that the self-learning approach would likely be an appropriate method for technical education as well as for the teaching of craftsmen, adults, and personnel in industry and business.
