Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 1994.
In the bottom-line driven corporate world, Instructional Development (ID) practitioners need to adopt a more flexible, situational approach to get their jobs done as productively as possible. But, until recently, little research had addressed this critical issue of the "situational approach," let alone the crucial decision-making processes involved or the judgment concerning the quality of the decisions made.Subjects--Topical Terms:

But, until recently, little research had addressed this critical issue of the "situational approach," let alone the crucial decision-making processes involved or the judgment concerning the quality of the decisions made.

The present study explores how various situational factors influence the corporate ID practitioner's decision making by examining examples of the best practice in the field. The qualitative case study is the method chosen to cast light on the dynamic interplay of critical situational factors. The context of this study is the China Productivity Center (CPC), Taiwan. Four expert ID practitioners are interviewed and five case studies are reported. Although all five cases are about corporate ID practice, each one tells a different story.

The client's needs emerge as the most significant situational factor in the experienced practitioners' decision making. The other three originally identified factors (individual characteristics, organizational influences, and resource availability), together with three additional ones (cultural context, nature of the task, and stakeholders), are also critical to the practitioners' professional conduct.

Five emerging themes consistently appear in each of the five cases. These are: (1) cultural context, (2) situation analysis and synthesis, (3) client and stakeholders, (4) performance capacities (including capacity analysis and professional ethics), (5) competitive advantages (including business strategy, professional conduct, and changing roles). This researcher suggests that each of these themes be taken into account in corporate ID practice.

Based on these findings, a conceptual framework for corporate ID practice is provided. This framework is descriptive in nature and refers to no specific processes. Suggestions for future research are identified under two themes: corporate ID practice in general, and the experienced practitioner's decision-making process specifically. The researcher's personal reflections regarding this inquiry are then offered.
