This study used a phenomenological approach to explore the factors that influenced the ethnic identity development of multiracial Native Americans. Thematic analysis was used to explore and organize the data that emerged from the MEIM and a semi-structured interview. This study explored the theoretical underpinnings of developmental models, with a specific focus on theories supporting ethnic and bi-racial developmental models. It also explored the factors that affected the ethnic identity development of both multi-racial and mono-racial Native American individuals, with a focus on the effects of historical trauma. Finally, it explored the connection between well-being and participation in Native American cultural events and traditions. A semi-structured interview was conducted with eight individuals who self-identified as multi-racial Native American and were aged 25-65 plus. There were two male participants and six female participants. The participants also completed the MEIM scale and a written demographic questionnaire. The review of the data resulted in three factors that strongly affected the ethnic identity development of the participants. These factors were caretaker influence, phenotype influence, and engagement in Native American cultures and traditions.
