Thesis (Ph.D.)--Cornell University, 1993.
This dissertation traces the origins of literary modernity by examining early Meiji popular novels with respect to relations between author, narrator, reader, textual persona, public, nation, and tradition. In particular, political novels (seiji shosetsu) are found to figure prominently as a medium of literary change, thus calling into question canonical views that have described Japanese literary modernity as either spontaneous or foreign-inspired in origin. A preface frames the inquiry by examining some definitions of Japanese literary modernity, while identifying the tautological nature of historical formulations.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter One examines the generic classification of the political novels, which defy standard categories of authorship, nationality, and periodization, in an attempt to explain the marginalization of political novels from the canon.

Chapter Two argues that modernity, as a literary reaction against the confines of traditional discourse, was made conceivable by a political environment of crisis which increasingly identified government and tradition at the root of society's woes.

Chapter Three argues that increases in the velocity of news media, coupled with the use in novels of contemporaneous news events, led to a chronotope of narrative incompleteness, characterized by reading strategies that emphasized plot over texture.

Chapter Four explores the shifting boundaries of the implied reading community as a result of political and travel themes.

Chapter Five suggests that the entry of Western consumer goods infused 'external' fashion with 'internal' ideological content, thus producing new forms of character interiority.

Chapter Six argues that the implied relation of readers to textual personae was significantly altered by changes in social mobility, enabling readers to view the political novels in terms of actual life possibilities.

Chapter Seven examines the use of literary images of crowds to disguise the judgmental authority of narration, resulting in a view of "realism" whereby events and personae are "allowed to speak for themselves.".
