The purpose of this quantitative experimental study was to examine the impact of an educational program based on adult learning principles and strategies on reducing stress among informal family caregivers who care for relatives with chronic respiratory illnesses. The study encompassed a six-week period of time that included training that utilized adult learning principles and strategies. The central question was: To what extent does the exposure to an adult educational program based on adult learning strategies affect the level of caregivers' stress? The sample included 84 participants randomly assigned to two groups; an experimental group and a control group. A t-test was used to measure the scores using the Zarit Burden Interview Scale (Bedard, Molloy, Squire, Dubois, Lever, & O'Donnell, 2001) to determine if post-intervention test measurements were significantly different among the two groups. The findings led to the rejection of the null hypothesis and supported the alternate hypothesis of informal family caregivers exposed to the educational program based on adult learning strategies and principles (independent variable) showed a lower level of caregiver stress as defined by the mean score of 8.71 with 3.49 (SD) from the sample variance. Informal family caregivers not participating in the adult educational program showed on average a greater level of stress as defined by the mean score of 16.5 with 4.2 (SD). The research concluded informal family caregivers did benefit from the educational program based on adult learning principles and strategies on reducing stress.
