Survivor testimony, memoirs, and extant performance texts are utilized in this study, which examines the significance of theatrical performances given in Nazi transit, labor, and death camps during the Second World War. It argues theatrical performances served a variety of functions, which had the impact of both empowering and demoralizing the prisoner population. It addresses whether the theatre was able to improve inmates' physical survival, positively affect their mental survival, and whether there were opportunities to subvert the power structure of the concentration camp. It also suggests that in other circumstances, performances served to distract, pacify, and humiliate prisoners. Three types of performances given in concentration camps are discussed: those created officially by prisoners for the entire camp, those created by prisoners presented privately for camp officers, and those created clandestinely by prisoners for prisoners. When considering these types, the work pays particular attention to who held control of the means of production in preparing performances and how this altered the impact of performances upon both performers and audience members.

By drawing predominantly from survivors' memoirs and testimonies, the work bears witness to the power of culture amidst adversity, paying tribute to the way Jews, political prisoners, the Roma, and other targets of National Socialism were committed to the value of theatrical expression during the Holocaust.
