The purpose of this study was to ascertain elementary music teachers' use of Curwen hand signs, hand staff, gestures, and body signs as kinesthetic aids for improving pitch matching and note reading in the elementary music classroom. Also, this study sought to find the most common kinesthetic approaches being used, and to collect teachers' professional opinions on the effectiveness of the tools they employ.

Kinesthetic approaches are often used during the preparatory phase of teaching pitch matching, as well as reading pitches from the musical staff. Common kinesthetic approaches include Curwen hand signs, hand staff, gestures, and body signs. The uses of these tools are a common practice among elementary music teachers today, but research conducted on this topic is limited.

After receiving an email invitation to participate in an anonymous survey on kinesthetic approaches, 143 elementary music educators who are members of the Texas Music Educators Association chose to take part.

The results showed that the participants of this study believe that the kinesthetic approaches they use in the elementary music classroom aid in helping students to match pitch and to read pitches from the staff. Further, in grades two through five, the most commonly reported kinesthetic approach to both teaching pitch matching and reading pitches from the staff was Curwen hand signs. In kindergarten, the most common approach used was gestures, such as drawing melodic contours in the air with hands. Results for first grade revealed that gestures were the most common aid used to teach pitch matching, and Curwen hands signs were the most common approach used to teach reading pitches from the staff.
