Why and how is dependent capitalism in Taiwan sustained? This study enters the hidden abode of production, a common blind spot of the state-centered approach, to answer this question.

Consisting of a variety of small-to-medium sized units of production, which carry out only some steps (not all) of labor-intensive production, the subcontracting system in Taiwan generates three mechanisms to ensure that not only light industrial goods but consent among workers is manufactured cheaply and flexibly.

The first mechanism is unfolded in inter-unit relationships. Between units of production of the subcontracting system, externalization and internalization of production processes, pressure-transmitting operations from the upper to the lower layers of the subcontracting chain, the supra-entrepreneurial logic of using others' labor power without entering into employment relations, and activation of industrial reserve army increase flexibility and capacity to cope with rapid expansion and wide fluctuation of exports of light industrial goods.

The second mechanism is intra-unit adjustment. Within the unit of production of the subcontracting System, involvement of petty bosses in production work, grass-roots R&D to speed up production, use of labor time to its full extent, and flexible deployment of workers help units at lower layers of the subcontracting system absorb the pressure passed down from upper layers.

The third mechanism is related to generation of opportunities for workers to set up their own workshops. This is so because it requires little capital for the would be bosses to establish the numerous tiny units of production to carry out subcontracted production.

Two effects ensue. The first one is the political effect of calming down wage workers, for the option for "exit" to become their own bosses reduces the need to "voice" out their grievance as wage workers in the shop floor.

Secondly, after they become their own bosses, what they practice in the small workshops is an out-and-out capitalist logic, manifested in manipulation of inter-unit relationships and intra-unit adjustments. They exit only to be located in units at lower layers of the subcontracting system, that is, to be part of dependent capitalism and to reinforce it. With these two effects, the third mechanism can be termed as the "micro-entrepreneurial" way of reproducing dependent capitalism.
