The Chinese novel, The Dream of the Red Chamber (Honglou Meng), is generally attributed to Cao Xueqin (1716? or 1723?-1763 or 1764), but whether the last forty chapters (chapters 81-120) were written by him has been a dispute never resolved. The dispute of authorship occurs because historical evidence shows that chapters 81-120 were not in the earliest circulating manuscripts. Previous studies of the authorship mainly point to the inconsistencies of plot between the first 80 chapters and the last 40 chapters. It is upon these "inconsistencies" that the dual-authorship scholars base their argument. Studies that apply statistics or computer technology as a means of investigation of The Dream of the Red Chamber have been very limited, and the data used was small in scope.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In order to deal with this problem in more detail from a scientific point of view, computerized statistical analyses have been employed in this dissertation and are focused on the vocabulary from the Gengchen (1760) and the Chengyi (1792) Versions. The random sampled pages consist of 240,000 characters, about 33 percent of the 120-chapter novel. Five grammatical categories: adjective, adverb, noun, stative verb, and particle, have been selected for analysis. The statistical tests used on the data are: the Pearson Product Moment Correlation, the Phi Coefficient, and the Coefficient of Association Q, which are standard statistical tests for indexing the strength of the statistical association between pairs of attributes. For these analyses, the text is divided into three equal groups of chapters, called texts A (chapters 1-40), B (chapters 41-80), and C (chapters 80-120). The vocabulary of the forty chapters of The Gallant Ones (Ernu Yingxiong Zhuan), called text D (written by Wen Kang, ?-1850?), has also been tested in the same manner to validate this method. The assumption is that if the three texts of The Dream of the Red Chamber were each written by different authors, there would be zero or negative correlation in their vocabulary associations indicated by the test results. Higher and positive correlations would mean that the three texts are more likely to have been written by the same author.

Test results reveal that in texts A and B (pair AB) there are 13 positive and 1 negative correlation indices; in texts A and C (pair AC), 12 positive and 2 negative; in texts B and C (pair BC), 10 positive and 4 negative. In contrast to these, in texts A and D (pair AD) there are 3 positive but 11 negative correlation indices, and in texts B and D (pair BD), 6 positive but 8 negative. These results invalidate the view that chapters 81-120 were completely authored by Gao E. This study supports the likelihood that The Dream of the Red Chamber is substantially a work of single authorship.
