Thesis (M.A.)--Southeastern Louisiana University, 2015.
This thesis analyzes the writing in three fine art museum collection catalogue entries, comparing the same three artists (Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Georgia O'Keeffe) across comparable works. While researching and writing entries for a museum catalogue during a curatorial internship, I found style guides, rule books, or other such resources for these entries simply do not exist. This study shows instead that museum catalogues follow in-house traditions based on the cultural branding of specific institutions and consequent assumptions about their audiences--an approach that is now being challenged by web-based catalogues and their consequently wider audiences. The catalogues studied here---New Orleans Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and National Gallery of Art---demonstrate that institutional bias is the primary driving force and intent behind museum collection catalogue text. While no true standard exists between the three catalogues, the commonality is each museum's unique bias and how each strives to present itself to the public through cultural branding.
