This study investigates the epistemological coherentism in the theological methodology of Stanley J. Grenz and suggests that Grenz's proposal leaves the Christian faith in a position to claim only that it better envisions communitarian life in God than other religions. The thesis argues that epistemological coherentism results in self-enclosed metaphysical constructs that may be marginally consistent internally, but cannot justifiably claim superiority over other constructs, and therefore, only argue for a belief system's local acceptability. Although many postmodern theologians claim that this is the best-case scenario in an anti-realist, postmodern world, the case is made here that the necessity of adopting such a metaphysic is overblown, and indeed unconvincing. Rather, Christian uniqueness requires an epistemology that is dependent upon special revelation that functions as the ground for all intelligible human experience and knowledge.
