Recorded as one of the primary causes of injuries to women, intimate partner violence perpetrated against women presents a major public health dilemma in the United States (CDC, 2011). The lived experiences of African American women during the decision-making process to leave abusive intimate partners were captured to gain an understanding of the phenomena from their own perspectives. Despite the copious research concerning intimate partner violence and why women stay or leave abusive relationships, studies regarding African American women's experiences during decision-making is limited. The Investment Model served as theoretical framework for the study emphasizing the commitment level and emotional position of victims during decision-making with respect to leaving. Guided by Moustakas' (1994) transcendental phenomenological approach, the study utilized face-to-face, in-depth interviews as a means of gathering, describing, and empathetically understanding 10 African American women's experiences. Five significant themes that emerged were (a) emotional ties and changes during decision-making, (b) abusive behavior experienced and endured, (c) ways women conceptualized their abuser, (d) the final straw-turning point, and (e) external support received. The findings of the study added to the existing literature in understanding the experiences of African American women during the decision-making process to leave abusive intimate partners. Implications for the results were discussed. The recommendation of future qualitative studies with African American women concerning decision-making was suggested. An awareness of factors contributing to women's vulnerabilities throughout the process of deciding to leave could support mental health providers in developing and implementing more effective intervention strategies for victims.
