This study focused on the effects of class, market, and human capital variables on gender earning differentials in Taiwan's labor force in 1983 and 1992. Data were derived from Manpower Utilization Surveys for 1983 and 1992. Each had a sample size of about 20,000. Descriptive analyses, multiple regression analyses, and decomposition methods were used to analyze the data.

This study confirmed that class, measured by either Wright's or Goldthorpe's schema, are prominent factors in accounting for gender earning determination. Within each class schema, women were more segregated in lower class positions than men, and received lower earnings than men within each of the class schema. The argument of human capital theory was generally supported by this study. Education was more economically beneficial to men than women in 1983, but not in 1992. Men received higher returns on earnings from age than women, but women received higher returns on earnings from tenure than men. Marital status was the most influential individual-level factor in explaining earning determination. Examining structural variables, this study confirmed that both men and women with higher earnings live in urban areas, and work in core industries, in the public sector, in large firms, and in male-dominated occupations. Unexpectedly, it was found that earning returns to those who work in female-dominated occupations are also superior to those available in gender-mixed occupations.

Finally, it was found that the degree of discrimination against women has increased in both the core and periphery sectors, and in both urban and rural areas in the past ten years. In 1983, women in the periphery sector and rural areas experienced less discrimination than in the core sector and urban areas. However, in the most recent 1992 data, women experienced greater discrimination in both the periphery sector and rural areas than in the core sector and urban areas.
