This study presents the theory and methodology of Allan Kaprow within the context of an American process art theory. In Part One, the philosophical, social, political and artistic roots of process art in America are examined. The writings, statements and works of the four most influential American process theorists and artists, John Dewey, Harold Rosenberg, Jackson Pollock, and John Cage, are analyzed as major influences on Kaprow. In addition, a process world view, often termed "process philosophy," is correlated with the increasing importance given to the process in twentieth-century art and art theory.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In Part Two, Kaprow's contributions to process art and art theory are considered in light of previously discussed influences. An examination of Kaprow's theory and methodology reveals that his process approach was derived in large part from the fundamentals of American pragmatism and an American action aesthetic. Furthermore, several misconceptions regarding Kaprow's artistic intent are exposed, including that his works were: unrehearsed performances in the dadaist tradition, neo-dadaist gestures of negation, acts of rebellion in repudiation to abstract expressionism, and performance pieces stemming from theatre.

The study establishes that, far from being acts of negation, Kaprow's works were intended to enhance and intensify the individual's everyday experience by promoting a dynamic exchange between the individual and the environment. Kaprow sought to thoroughly engage the participant with art as an activity of life. Kaprow's process approach is evidenced by his progressive elimination of the distinction between the spectator and the work of art, his transactional view of experience, his desire to keep the line between art and life as fluid and indistinct as possible, and his emphasis on the transitory. What remains of significance in his art is the memory of the activity and its role in the human context.

With Kaprow, the process philosophy of John Dewey, the emphasis on gesture and process in the works of Jackson Pollock and the writings of Harold Rosenberg, the Black Mountain College experiential aesthetic and the chance philosophy of John Cage were synthesized into an American Happening.
