Thesis (M.A.)--Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, 2015.
After my recurring childhood visits to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, I found that not all of the treasures on view were labeled with didactic panels. This absence made me contemplate the story of the object in a given exhibit and question what further information could enhance the visitor's experience. These questions have remained with me into my professional and academic work, and the possibility of finding a solution has precipitated in my use of the Mind Mapping theory.

Mind Mapping is a process that enables a person to make multiple connections with a subject. Using open-ended questions, exhibitions can draw out existing mental associations naturally formed through Mind Mapping on a daily basis. Likewise, based on Mind Mapping, exhibitions can be designed such that visitors enhance their learning in a self-directed manner. This thesis examines how exhibition designers may use the technique of Mind Mapping as a supportive tool to improve the visitor's experience. The case studies that I analyzed, the interviews with exhibition design professionals, and the testing of the prototype have reinforced my theory.

Culture Connection is an exhibition in New-York Historical Society Museum & Library, which aims to highlight the cultural connection between Egyptians and US Americans. When I applied the Mind Mapping theory in my Culture Connection exhibition project, I received positive feedback from professionals in exhibition and museum design field. Using Mind Mapping and the digital technology made the connections between galleries and the activities easier to navigate through. The open-ended questions gave visitors the chance to test their information about Egyptian culture. I believe that the technique of Mind Mapping is effective for exhibition designers to make exhibitions enhance visitors' learning. As exhibition designers, our effort should be focused on synthesizing the approaches and translating the challenges into the most memorable, unique experience for the visitor.
