Professionalism is required to perform as a health care provider. Accrediting agencies for medical education programs nationwide mandate curricular objectives focused on teaching and assessment of the behaviors of professionalism to ensure graduates of varied health professions possess knowledge and skills needed to provide patient care as well as to function as effective members of the health care team. Physician assistants (PAs) are recognized as physician-extenders working in complementary roles to physicians. PAs are trained similar to physicians inclusive of professionalism training. Professionalism is one of the six required competencies of the PA profession standards. PA students are evaluated on demonstration of professional behaviors in both didactic and clinical training settings. Assessment of professional behaviors include: faculty evaluation of dress code adherence, problem-based clinical vignettes and team-based scenarios to preceptor assessment of patient encounters and student-clinician assignments on clinical rotations. Evaluation of professionalism entails consideration of multi-dimensional diverse techniques, communication skills, cultural competency, the ability to place the needs of the patient in a primary role and adapt as necessary based on medical illness and psychological conditions. Perceptions of professionalism may evolve over time and be perceived differently by faculty and students. This study examined student perceptions of professionalism compared to faculty perceptions to see if there was a difference in the two perceptions.
