This dissertation in the philosophy of education argues that the proper form of schooling for all persons is liberal education. The term "liberal education" is defined and contrasted with notions of schooling for utility. Utilitarian forms of schooling are shown to be inconsistent with both individualism and community, and, therefore, inconsistent with democracy, and the history of American schooling is shown to be dominated by various forms of schooling for utility. Liberal education is defended as the best preparation for and as the best argument for democracy, and as the best way of becoming a free, active, and creative human being.
