Thesis (Ph.D.)--Universiteit Antwerpen (Belgium), 2015.
In the course of my own practice as a piano teacher in Part-time Art Education I developed a method which involves an interrelationship of all the various dimensions of musicality such as listening, designing, noting down and performing, and which uses the visual capacity of my pupils in such a way that their own drawings constitute a starting point for their compositions and for the visualisation of music-theoretical concepts. In applying this method I was surprised by the unexpected, authentic thought processes and strategies that emerged. When I studied these, I saw that certain themes stood out. Four of them sparked my interest as being worthy of investigation in more depth. This resulted in the present dissertation, consisting of four case studies:

Four of them sparked my interest as being worthy of investigation in more depth. This resulted in the present dissertation, consisting of four case studies:

The integration of visual expression in music education for children. The results suggest that children, by using their visual capacity, can acquire a deeper sense of what music is as a structured material and can acquire an understanding of musical terminology through play.

Transdisciplinary dimensions in the composing activities of children: transfer of strategies and transformation of knowledge. The results demonstrate that the non-musical input of the visual dimension seems to awaken a synergy of a broader range of other capacities and skills. In this component we see how children, beyond simply abstracting from their own drawings and stories, are abstracting from a learning process, which represents an evolution towards self-regulating and transdisciplinary learning.

Children composing and their visual-spatial approach to the keyboard. From the results we see how musical thinking as structure-thinking can be interwoven with non-musical ways of thinking by the use of a visual-spatial approach to the keyboard.

Children composing and the tonal idiom. The results indicate that both interdisciplinary and symbolic thinking can help children achieve a better understanding of the tonal idiom and can also lower the threshold for composing.
