520 $a This thesis explores changes in Persian-language education in late-19th century Awadh and the North-Western Provinces through the lens of Persian educational texts produced and printed at the Naval Kishore Press in Lucknow and Kanpur.
520 $a Using these lithographic prints, along with colonial reports, the thesis argues that two major shifts occurred in the area of Persian-language education. First, locally run Persian-medium schools slowly declined, as did the traditional emphasis on the teaching of Persian literature. In particular, literature deemed morally questionable by the colonial authorities slowly fell out of favor. Second, as enrollment in government-run "vernacular" schools grew, many of these schools began to incorporate a Persian-as-classical-language component, due in part to local demand. This led to the publication of numerous Persian grammar primers and elementary readers, as well as an increased reliance on literary works favored by the colonial authorities.
520 $a The thesis focuses specifically on the Persian educational output of the Naval Kishore Press in part due to the fact that the Press held the monopoly on printing for the Education Department of Awadh throughout much of the period. The Press not only cultivated relations with colonial educational administrators, but also produced works traditionally used in locally run Persian-medium schools, as well as texts geared to a popular audience interested in improving its command of Persian. As such, an examination of the Persian-language education output of the Naval Kishore Press not only illustrates shifts within the formal educational system, but also popular interest in Persian education in 19th-century Awadh and the NWP.
