The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the role of cultural values in the interpretation of significant life experiences perceived by Taiwanese Chinese.

A purposive sample of five men and six women was chosen through informal networks based on the criteria that these participants had to have spent at least twenty-five years in Taiwan. Moreover, this selected sample was diverse in terms of age, socio-economic background, educational level, and their chosen life experiences. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and was analyzed using the phenomenological method.

The study uncovered three areas of findings. First, six cultural values were identified as having an impact on the interpretation process. Four values described by all the participants were respecting authority, maintaining harmony, valuing study and degrees, and putting men above women. Two discussed by a few participants included acknowledging fate and admiring nature. These cultural values intersected to shape the process of meaning-making.

The second finding of this study was that there exists a common process of interpretation containing three phases--the trigger event, the immediate reaction, and the meaning negotiation, all of which intersect with the biography and context of each participant. Participants journeyed through this process, not necessarily in a linear order, to make meaning. The subsequent events often stimulated participants to revisit their previous experiences, which allowed different layers of meaning to emerge and rendered the interpretation process an endless cycle.

The third finding of this study was that cultural values affected each interrelated element of the entire interpretation process. The participants' journey through the entire process, and the phase of meaning-negotiation in particular, was influenced by cultural values to varying degrees, ranging from being highly affected to not affected by cultural values which are independent of biography and context. Overall, the extent to which the impact cultural values had on the interpretation was mainly determined by participants' biography and context.

The study concluded that there is a commonly shared process of interpreting life experiences which is culturally constructed. Cultural values did play a significant role in shaping the process of meaning-making.
