For decades, children's creativity in drawing has been viewed as free from the influences of the external world and independent of their cultural experiences. This study is conducted to question this belief, and to explore the nature of children's drawing experiences and its relationship with social, cultural, and environmental factors. Its final goal is to provide insights for art education and cross-cultural understandings.

The goal of this research was pursued with a cross-cultural-comparative method with a focus on children's drawings collected from the Mid-western United States and Taiwan. The Clark's-Drawing-Abilities-Test (CDAT) was used in collecting children's drawings. Children at grades 2, 4, 6, and 8 were selected from public schools in these two cultures. There were 372 students from Taiwan tested in total and 398 students from the Mid-western United States.

Content analysis was the method chosen for data analysis. Integrated with Gardner's (1962) cross-cultural comparative technique, and Thompson's (1955) methods of motif-indexing and classification, a new analytic schema was developed to serve as a basis for analysis of a large quantity of visual data. However, the interpretation of this data was conducted through a qualitative methodology.

McFee's Perception-and-Delineation (1961) theory is used to build a conceptual framework to guide the exploration of children's visual experiences from following five perspectives: (1) Cultural Maintenance, (2) Cultural Change, (3) Socialization, (4) Aesthetic Preference, and (5) Response to Nature.

Results of this study provide an understanding of children's drawing experiences as related to their socio-cultural environment. Children's perception of, and interaction with, the environment is actually a process of enculturation, from which drawing experiences are derived. The development of children's drawing abilities should be understood as a learning path, in which universal and culture-relative factors interact with each other to shape features of children's graphic expression.
