Idioms have transformed from being rooted in an action or event to functioning as a container of meaning; they are, by definition, a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words. Spanning historical origins though contemporary usages, the idiom has transitioned from the literal to the figurative and in the process has managed to retain meaning and significance. This project is a reflection on a sample set of these phrases and synthesizes the historical and literal with the contemporary and figurative in order to consider the ability of the figurative to carry the emotion of the literal, and how much of what we mean to say is tethered to context and communal understanding.
