This qualitative case study is positioned in digital music. However, it is only an example of a larger challenge that many businesses and institutions are facing: a rapidly changing environment and dealing with how people quickly adjust to understand what is going on in order to be productive. This study sought to expand what is known about how business professionals learn in the presence of emerging business models by exploring how environmental scanning interacts with strategic orientation, and how these factors influence learning agility.

The following research questions were used: 1) What did participants perceive they needed to learn in order to work in the digital landscape? 2) How did participants attempt to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they perceived are necessary to work in the digital landscape? 3) What factors did participants perceive might have influenced their work in the digital landscape?

A qualitative case study methodology was used and the sample consisted of 14 individuals that worked for major record labels, independent record labels, music publishing houses, or digital entertainment companies. Each participant shared in a semi-structured interview and completed a background & demographic profile.

The main findings indicate that the ability to learn from experience is key to learning in the presence of emerging business models. Results of the study also showed that awareness and understanding of the environment was key in working in the digital music landscape. Lastly, problem analysis was used in order to build a strategic orientation in the digital landscape.

One of the study's recommendations for further research is to conduct a further similar study with a wider range of record business professionals who were at the lower end of the spectrum to compare and contrast to the experiences of record business professionals in this study who were at the higher end of the spectrum to see what we might learn in a range of people in the record industry.
