Thesis (Ed.D.)--Teachers College, Columbia University, 2009.
This dissertation is primarily concerned with the development of a new online academic space entitled Musical Perspectives that presents scholarly work focused on the performance of music, also known as performance studies. The goal of the dissertation is to systematically document the creation of a new space for the publication of work in music performance and in the process understand what it means to do scholarly work in music performance: who is involved in music performance, what kind of professional work they produce, and how to best merge the different cultures of music performance into one space. Musical Perspectives is divided into three areas that provide an opportunity for a broad field to publish systematic research, experiences and opinions, and performances of music. The design of the space is intended to reflect the ways in which people in the field communicate knowledge to one another, and is not strictly limited to traditional research.

Musical Perspectives was created through the synthesis and modification of two instructional design methods. The result is a systematic process that can be used as a model for the creation of other journals in the future. The process includes a formative evaluation consisting of semi-structured interviews with members of the initial editorial/advisory board, and a summative evaluation that presents site usage data from the audience of the Web site as well as a comparison of the first issue of the space with similar journals.

The data collected through the evaluations indicates that Musical Perspectives is a feasible space for scholarly work in music performance and suggests that the site is beginning to meet the need for which it was designed.
