The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth of computer education in selected developing countries including India, the Republic of China, Singapore, and Thailand and to use these results to formulate a plan for the improvement of computer education in Sri Lanka. Information was collected from United Nations publications, reports of Ministries of Education and other government agencies of the respective countries, research reports and papers presented at International Conferences on computer education, and personal communications and interviews.

A survey was conducted to evaluate the computer programs in operation in Sri Lanka. The survey responses indicated that instructional aspects of computer-related studies needed attention and improvement. Students needed more time for hands-on experience. The hardware available was inadequate for programs to be effective.

Computer education is an important component of education, and Sri Lanka should initiate strategies to improve computer education programs. Recommendations for Sri Lanka include: (1) expansion of the present pilot project to all the provinces; (2) initiation of a pilot project in computer education for primary schools; (3) inclusion of computer education as a course in the Diploma in Education program of the universities; (4) establishment of special schools to provide computer education for the talented; and (5) the provision of scholarships for talented students to study computer science in developed countries.
