This research investigated the role of family structure, persistence, and counselor involvement as predictors of postsecondary educational attainment. Family structure consisted of single mother, single father, and intact families. Persistence was measured by academic expectation, academic integration, and social integration. Counselor involvement was measured by the number of visits students had with their school counselor for academic or personal reasons. Students' background variables of race, gender, and socioeconomic status were also measured for their contribution to degree attainment. Parental involvement was included as a moderating variable. The study consisted of two models, one with the background variables and the other with persistence, parental involvement, and counselor involvement added.

Utilizing logistic regression analyses, significant relationships were found among the race, gender, SES, parental involvement, family structure, academic expectation, academic integration, and social integration variables. Academic counseling did not reveal a significant relationship to degree attainment. Personal counseling revealed a significant negative relationship to postsecondary degree attainment.
