This study was designed to test the conceptual distinctions between vocational interest and cognitive abilities. While vocational interest tests are used extensively by counselors with the idea that they measure potential job interests, no study to date has explored the extent that cognitive ability may influence vocational preferences. The study was also designed to test John Holland's hexagonal model with a group of clinically referred adults. Using archival data from 42 adults, cognitive ability and vocational interest test data were compiled and analyzed to test these two questions. Results showed that Holland's hexagonal model was not supported by the data and that, as a group, verbal intelligence was highly associated with interest in artistic and creative vocations.
