Frank L. Battisti is one of the preeminent wind band conductors of the late Twentieth century and this study examines his ideological development and professional achievements through the lens of cultural study and historical context. Frank Battisti's professional achievements included his involvement in over sixty commissioned works for wind band/ensemble and his career as a music educator reflects his dedication to the promotion of arts curriculum in which students are encouraged to explore, discover, and create. His efforts have not only influenced the artistic development of many students, but also stimulated the creation of contemporary wind literature, provoked the creation of a worldwide band movement, and elevated the wind band/ensemble to a level of artistic merit unseen before in its history.

Any exploration of Frank Battisti's experiences would not be complete without acknowledging the larger context from which he comes. To discuss his life in isolation from other events in the history of the American wind band would be the waste of an opportunity to discuss how music influenced Frank Battisti and in turn how Frank Battisti influenced music. The musical experiences of Patrick Gilmore, John Philip Sousa, Albert Austin Harding, and Frederick Fennell illuminate the development of the wind band/ensemble in America from its roots in popular music to the widespread establishment of school band programs. When Battisti entered the classroom in 1953, he inherited their musical traditions and focused on maintaining the educational goals of the traditional band program. As he formed his own educational philosophy, Battisti noticed how none of the educational goals he found important were reflected in the curriculum commonly used in traditional programs. Battisti began to believe that curriculum used in school music programs should address the educational needs of each individual student within his ensembles. Ultimately, it was the beliefs established as a youth in Ithaca that lead him to develop a philosophy of arts/music education independent of the traditional American school band program.

The influence of the community of Ithaca on Battisti's aesthetic development is clear: his youth displays many facets through which he learned to love music and this passion became the foundation of all of his future accomplishments. To discover the experiences that propelled Frank into a career in music, it is necessary to return to the influence of family and community. The core beliefs Battisti established while a member of the community of Ithaca helped to form the musical philosophy he shared with the global music community.

An examination of his teaching career at Ithaca High School will reveal how important the influence of Warren Benson and Frederick Fennell were to the development of Frank Battisti as an artist and educator. This period also highlights Battisti's philosophical split from the traditional school band program and the establishment of his educational philosophy based an arts centered curriculum meant to stimulate student development. The type of engagement Battisti fostered for all students, regardless of innate ability, garnered responses of greater depth and elevated student performance over time.

It was these philosophies that later became the corner stone of the wind ensemble program he established at the New England Conservatory of Music. In order to elevate the standards for wind band Battisti felt the medium would need to adhere to the same standards as all professional musical organizations. He felt if an educator was serious about promoting performance standards, literature, and aesthetic appreciation, he or she needed to open their performances to critics.
