The theory of learning styles maintains that students prefer one style of learning over another. The cultural learning style theory is a concept that culture plays a role in students' learning styles. Culture, experience, and development influence learners, which in turn, influences learning preference. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine the learning style preferences for the Chamorro, Filipino, and Chuukese cultures in a community college in Guam. Data was collected from 20 general education courses using a self-reported survey containing Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI) 3.1 and demographic information. From the survey results, frequencies were computed on the learning style preferences of Chamorro, Filipino, and Chuukese community college adult learners. All three cultures showed a dominant preference for the Diverging learning style. A Pearson chi-square test indicated that there was an association between culture and learning style preference. The one-way ANOVA showed that the LSI mean scores were not statistically different among the three cultures, Chamorro, Filipino, and Chuukese, from a community college in Guam. All three cultures' LSI mean scores were within the Diverging quadrant. Further analyses were done with learning style preferences in relation to gender, age, and major. Chi-square test analyses revealed that there was an association in the distribution of learning styles based on gender. Both genders showed a preference for the Diverging learning style. A T-test between the LSI mean scores and gender showed that there was a significant difference in the LSI AC-CE mean score based on gender. Although the AC-CE mean score for both genders were still within the Diverging learning style quadrant (CE/RO), females had a stronger preference for the CE mode than males. This study contributed to the application of the learning style theory by identifying the learning styles of Chamorro, Filipino, and Chuukese cultures in Guam. The information gained contributed to possible strategies to improve learning.
