The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the motivational orientations of Taiwanese adult undergraduate students who have reentered higher education at the Ta-Hwa Institute of Technology (THIT) night school. This study surveyed 400 students enrolled in THIT night school who were 21 years or older, had a full-time job during the day, and also graduated from formal education at least one year before enrolling in THIT. Using the 40-item version of the Educational Participation Scale (EPS) developed by Dr. Roger Bushier in 1982, completed surveys were returned to the THIT night school registrar's mailbox. Data for the study were tabulated and descriptive and inferential statistics were computed to respond to the research questions. The Statistical Package for Social (SPSS) was used for all data analyses. All inferential statistics, including t tests, Analyses of Variance (ANOVAs), and Tukey's HSD tests, used the .05 level of significant.

Of the sample of 400 students, 345 provided usable responses for an overall return rate of 89.25%. The results indicated that the most important motivational orientations reasons for students reentering higher education were Professional Advancement and Cognitive Interest, and the least important motivational orientation was External Expectation.

The results also indicated that business school students, female students, younger students, students with the fewest years out of formal education, student located at Hsin-Chu Industry Technical Research Institute (ITRE), single students, and lower income students were more strongly motivated to enroll in THIT night school than their counterparts. In addition, students whose current program at THIT was more relevant to their previous education and current job, and who had a strong desire to pursue a master's degree and follow lifelong learning principles were more motivated than their counterparts to enroll in THIT night school. Finally, students who agreed more strongly that their current courses were relevant to their current job, those who believed more strongly in lifelong learning principles, and those wanting to take educational courses for extra credit had a stronger desire than those who did not to pursue a master's degree.
