Even though there are many studies in piano teaching, little has been done. concerning the role of the teacher and the piano teaching-learning process. A balanced view of the teacher, student, and subject matter as well as the interactions among these three elements is needed to have an overall understanding of the teaching-learning process.

This study thus sought to present a systematic profiling of Taiwanese piano educators based on Alan Gumm's research in music teaching styles. Efforts were made to identify the characteristics of teachers that account for differences in teaching style and behavior. These variables were designated as external and internal environmental factors and an extensive literature review of those respective factors was conducted to substantiate the conceptualization of music teaching styles. The method of systems analysis was used to identify those environmental factors which help to shape teachers' teaching styles. Additionally, a critical review of piano teaching literature was conducted to synopsize those evolutionary thoughts in piano pedagogy.

In order to identify those prevalent piano teaching styles in Taiwanese higher education, data were collected through a questionnaire sent to the 232 piano teachers in Taiwanese universities and colleges. Analysis of the data was based on 214 responses out of those 218 returned.

The results showed that there are eight dimensions of piano teaching styles, enlightened instruction, potent teaching, aesthetics, performance effect, responsive learning environment, discriminatory teaching and learning, flexible classroom structure, and sequential instruction. Further results from a two-stage cluster analysis identified four prevalent piano teaching styles in the Taiwanese higher education setting, performance outcome oriented potent style, music content oriented discriminatory style, enlightened student centered style and teacher centered style.

By comparing the resulting data to the existing literature on idealized piano teaching, recommendations were made on the direction needed in order to improve piano teaching in Taiwanese music programs.
