In recent years, the interest in the help seeking among Chinese people has increased. A growing body of empirical studies has addressed the question of how Chinese people use different helping resources in their efforts to cope with emotional distress. Unfortunately, most of these studies were conducted with adult populations. Little is known about the help seeking Chinese adolescents employ in coping with psychological problems. Given the dearth of research on help seeking among Chinese adolescents in Taiwan, the purpose of this study is to increase knowledge of Chinese adolescent help seeking. Specifically, this study provides descriptive information about the types of problems which cause Taiwan Chinese high school students distress in academic/carper, family peer relationship, and personal/emotional issues as well as the informal and formal help seeking they employ with these problems. This study also elicits Chinese youth's perceptions of the barriers to seeking professional counseling for academic/career, interpersonal, and personal/emotional problems. Finally, this study examines gender variability in help seeking among Chinese adolescents. Self-administered questionnaires were taken by a total of 667 high school students of whom 325 were females and 352 were males. The results of this study indicate that Chinese adolescents most frequently report academic/career problems. They tend to seek help from friends and families rather than formal helping resources. Chinese adolescents girls are more likely to seek informal help than their male counterparts. However, Chinese adolescent boys and girls are found equally unlikely to seek formal help. The leading barriers to seeking professional counseling are consistent across three problems areas, including: reluctance of self-disclosure, perceiving problems as not serious enough, friends as sufficient to help, unfamiliarity with the counseling process, and self-reliance. The results of this study have important implications in developing counseling services for Chinese high school students in Taiwan.
