This dissertation examines five domestic novels of the Ming and Qing dynasties: Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase); Honglou meng (A Dream of the Red Chamber or The Story of the Stone); Lin Lan Xiang; Xingshi yinyuon zhuan (The Marriage that Awakened the World); and Qilu deng (A Lamp at the Fork). Due to the striking resemblance in subject matter, theme, setting, literary art, and formal structure, the author treats these novels as a literary sub-genre, "the domestic novels.".Subjects--Topical Terms:

Hundreds of books and articles on Honglou meng and Jin Ping Mei exist, but the domestic novels in the Ming and Qing dynasties have not been studied as a whole. The author believes an extensive study of these novels is warranted, and the dissertation is an initial exploration. The study of this subject could potentially have a great impact on literary criticism, and literary creation, as well as on sociological and historical studies.

In the Introduction, the author deals with the meaning and the origin of the domestic novels, suggesting that this type of novel originated in the Huaben of the Song and Yuan dynasties. Among these novels, Jin Ping Mei is a pioneer work that provides great impetus to the others. Chapter Two studies the conflicts among family members besides their mutual help, displaying the ups and downs, and especially the degeneration and corruption of the well-to-do families, and revealing the maladies of the traditional family system. Chapter Three shows that the domestic novels share many artistic designs in housing, including painstaking residence arrangement and meaningful garden imagery. Chapter Four demonstrates that, unlike some early Chinese novels, which focused on the heroic adventures of supermen, the domestic novels take pains to describe daily household affairs, such as eating, amusement and ritual activities. Chapter Five analyzes the overall structure of the domestic novels, particularly the interlocking structure and the pattern of decline.

The meticulous descriptions and structuring in these domestic novels play multiple functions--revealing the life styles of the families, providing setting, contributing to characterization, and bringing forth implications and the authors' points of view.
