The theories and best practices of art museum teaching are constantly in flux, informed by shifting institutional priorities, current research and national standards. Thirty years ago, the Commission on Museums for a New Century released its landmark report Museums for a New Century-- outlining the future of art museum education practice. This study examines how the recommendations of the Commission unfolded into actual implementation of new teaching methods by art museums across the United States. A second benchmark report Excellence and Equity: Education and the Public Dimension of Museums, traces progress and provides additional recommendations. An in depth analysis of museum education literature will summarize the models and techniques used in context with relevant policy issues. Through this discussion I ask: 1.) how has learning in the museum changed; 2.) are museum educators equipped to meet the needs of visitor-centered learning experiences; and 1) what might the future of museum teaching look like? In the discussion, I suggest that the best approach to teaching in the museum is not "a one size fits all" model and that, for successful teaching to occur, educators must recognize the individualized needs of each visitor. The conclusion reviews the most recent pedagogical models that were developed subsequent to the Excellence and Equity.
