The pursuit of the best approaches for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) has been the focus of English experts in recent years. The exigency is more evident in countries, such as USA where the English Language is not only a subject in the curriculum, but a necessity that opens the door to many other opportunities. Even with their best efforts, language learners still face huge challenges in building vocabulary, especially the required repertoire of technical registers. With an increasing number of students whose future lie in building the required vocabulary to be successful in their education and in life, there is an absolute necessity to employ approaches, different from the conventional methods, to teach difficult vocabulary and technical registers. This study sets out to show that poetry is believed to have the potential in not only helping the students to build the required sets of vocabulary items but to also expose them to various contexts in which words can be used with its complex nuances.

This study used QUAN-Qual model to maximize the data collection and analysis on the use of poetry for vocabulary development of adult English learners. The quantitative study was carried out concurrently with a qualitative design that included observation, focus group discussions and interviews. The qualitative portion of the study added depth to the quantitative portion of the study, thereby enriching the results and analysis of the five research questions.

Both the data from quantitative study and the quantitative study revealed that adult English Language Learners are capable of developing and increasing their repertoire of vocabulary items through the use of poetry. This therefore made the use of poetry in an ESL classroom a better approach to vocabulary building than the conventional methods. This was more evident in the application, in context, of the words that belong to the technical registers. Also, while students' background was shown to have minimal impact in their ability to build vocabulary, students who had high scores in the survey in areas of preparation, strong support system and motivation outperformed their peers who were less prepared, less supported and less motivated to learn English.

Also, an online survey administered to ESL instructors of PCC revealed that ESL teachers who did not have literary background were more unlikely to use Literature in teaching ESL, even with their best interest to help the students. As interviews of the sample of faculty members further revealed, instructors are rather more likely to apply teaching methods backed by their academic background, which they consider helpful to their students, only if they have sufficient knowledge of what to do. This study, therefore, established the connection between an ESL instructor's undergraduate and graduate studies to the choice and comfort of using poetry or literature in ESL classes.

It is therefore necessary for colleges and universities to provide instructors with the needed skills set to enliven an ESL classroom with poetry. This would not only help language learners to be successful in their English classes but also in other courses, thereby reducing the attrition rate. It would also improve the employment potentials of ELLs in the job market and their meaningful contribution to the country's economy.
