Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 2008.
Despite two decades of development, tests designed to measure emotional intelligence (EI), in particular the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) and the Multifactor Emotional Intelligence Scale (MEIS), remain controversial. Concerns have been raised about the validity of theses tests as appropriate measures of EI, and about the nature and structure of EI itself. This volume argues that these concerns are largely a result of the approach taken during test development, and that much may be gained by adopting a more item-focused, meaningfulness-based approach in future measurement efforts, both in emotional intelligence and for the exploration of new psychological constructs in general.

This volume explores the art and science of investigating and measuring a new construct, using emotional intelligence as a primary example. The first chapter introduces key concepts, reviews the history and literature pertinent to emotional intelligence, and discusses qualitative features of past measurement efforts in this field. The second chapter reports on an original study (N=221) designed to explore the internal structure of emotional intelligence as measured by two prominent EI tests, the MEIS and the MSCEIT; in this study, confirmatory factor models are used to demonstrate that the factor structure of EI does not conform to the expectations of EI theory. The third chapter reports on a study (N=734) designed to more closely investigate the structure and properties of one of these tests, using item-response modeling techniques to gain a different perspective on important features of the test design; in this study, it is demonstrated that the choice of measurement technique may be more important than the actual content of test items in influencing individual patterns of response. Finally, the fourth chapter generalizes the evidence and discussion from the first three chapters to broader work in measuring new constructs, and discusses the implications of these studies for the field of emotional intelligence and interest in individual differences in psychology at large.
