Thesis (M.S.)--Murray State University, 2014.
Exponential growth in technology has occurred rapidly, especially in recent years. Consumers are now the driving force of the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) process. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are being asked to treat or teach individuals with communication impairments how to communicate using an application (app) and iPad type technology that was not recommended based on the clinical expertise of an SLP and a conventional AAC assessment. This thesis details the communicative outcomes of an individual whose family selected an app and iPad without prior consultation with an SLP. This author describes the assessments that were performed in order to complete the feature matching process to develop a communication profile. A communication profile was necessary to determine the communicative needs of an individual. The results outline the challenges, practices, and outcomes of the case study. Technology is only going to continue to grow and it is our responsibility as the experts in AAC to ensure we are adapting and evolving with this paradigm shift. However, it is imperative we maintain the premise of our role which is to provide a potential AAC user with the best total AAC solution instead of a particular device.
