The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of musical sung models with a familiar melody in teaching morphologic or syntactic structures to young children with expressive language disorders, a method that will henceforth be referred to as Speech and Language Music Therapy (SLMT). Results of past studies have suggested that music does assist with learning and memory. However, more research regarding the efficacy of incorporating music in the treatment of language disorders is needed. In the present study, the questions and models used to evoke the targeted morphologic or syntactic structures were sung in a melody familiar to the participants. A multiple baselines across subjects and behaviors research design was employed to evaluate the efficacy of SLMT. The results of the study revealed that all three participants made varying degrees of improvement in the correct production of their target behaviors. Results also showed that most of the target behaviors in all three participants did show some degree of generalization to unfamiliar stimuli and conversation.
