Thesis (M.Ed.)--The William Paterson University of New Jersey, 2014.
The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of using Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory when teaching in an elementary classroom. The study took place in an upper middle class northern New Jersey parochial school. The participants were 43 students from two fourth grade classes. The teacher researcher identified each student's dominant multiple intelligences using a multiple intelligence survey. A social studies unit of study was taught using the various multiple intelligences. Students were given a choice of projects based on various multiple intelligences. Data collection methods included comparing test scores before and after implementation of the study, a pre and post student survey, and anecdotal notes. The results of the study showed that there was an overall increase in participation and learning, and that participation and motivation was reportedly increased. The students indicated that they enjoyed learning in these modalities.
