The Common Core State Standards were designed for standards-based reform in the United States of America. These standards are expected to be fully implemented in all participating states by the 2014-2015 school year (California Department of Education, 2013). The goal of the Common Core State Standards is to shift the instructional practices of teachers to increase the number of college and career ready students. Teachers in both general and special education will responsible for providing students access to curriculum and instructional practices aligned with the Common Core State Standards. How teachers enforce and teach these standards may be the primary factor in determining its success. This study compared the perceptions of Southern California general and special education teachers as their districts move toward full adoption of the Common Core State Standards through an online survey.

The survey sample consisted of 30 general education teachers and 28 special education teachers. The study found that teacher perceptions on the access to circular resources and the adaptability of these standards to be similar. Some common trends were also identified in responses to open-ended questions. Participants identified strengths within the Common Core as more freedom for teachers and an increase in higher level thinking for students. Some concerns were identified, including a lack of curricular resources, adaptability for English language learners and students with a disability and a need for computer based-skills.
