Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2013.
Public art has undergone a transition, from predominantly traditional historical and cultural monuments, to a practice based on more social and interactive experiments. These experiments study the transformation of public and shared space as well as art's relationship to a specific setting. These works often take shape as ephemeral or nomadic projects. There has been little research that tackles the relationship between the evolution of public space and the art that is created to share the space with urban societies. Although various social philosophers have successfully defined contemporary public space, it is rare to consider public art when applied to philosophical concepts of social space. This thesis examines notions of predetermined life spans and other fleeting physical characteristics in public art, in attempt to more closely relate to the public it shares its space with. It also considers relational and engaging factors that forge a relationship between an art work within a community. This thesis applies art historical theory to public art that is intended to emphasize or improve our contemporary condition. It analyzes the social experiments implemented by contemporary artists working in social space.
