Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2010.
A phenomenological study of the TREK Outdoor Education Program, an Integrated Curriculum Program offered to Grade 10 students by the Vancouver School Board, used a mixed methods approach to explore what graduates found most significant about their outdoor education experience. Transformative learning theory was used as a theoretical framework with which to study student perspectives on program outcomes. Data was gathered using in-depth semi-structured interviews, an on-line survey, and journal reflections. One hundred and eighty-three graduates from 2000--2009 participated in this study. The results indicate that the TREK program is a transformative educational experience for many of its learners. Core concepts of transformative education were identified, which include: experiential learning; challenge; opportunities for critical reflection and dialogue; a safe learning environment; and time. The findings have implications for the design of educational programs in various settings and provide recommendations for practitioners who are interested in promoting transformative education.
