Multinational Corporations (MNC) have well-documented influences over host nations through the implementation of socioeconomic development programs, the provision of employment, and the availability of goods and services to host communities. One method of socioeconomic growth frequently adopted by such organizations is the deployment of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. Shell Nigeria, a large MNC in South East Nigeria has a number of CSR programs implemented in its host communities; however, a significant gap exists between the needs of the community as seen through the perspective of the community members and the current existing CSR programs. The qualitative phenomenological study was formulated to explore the beliefs and perspectives of community members living in areas affected by Shell Nigeria's CSR programs in an attempt to understand and identify the actual needs of the community. Indicated in the findings of the 20 participants of the study was a view of CSR as an obligation of Shell Nigeria. The obligations centered on direct infrastructural development programs such road construction, and the provision of power and electricity. Highlighted in the study was the perspective of community members by documenting the actual beliefs and perspectives of community members in their own words and expressions. The findings of the study were used to develop a model that empowers the community to be the epicenter of future CSR programs thus enabling CSR programs to emanate directly from the needs of the community and not on the perceived needs of the organization. The model can be used by MNCs to develop and deploy effective, culturally sensitive, and economically efficient CSR programs that are well accepted by the local and national communities of host nations.
