In this paper I explore social entrepreneurship as an alternative approach to solving social problems. I examine how those labeled as social entrepreneurs (SE) define and use the term as well as how large organizations utilize the concept to advance their respective agendas. I compare existing interpretations of social entrepreneurship and the 'Social Business' model advanced by Muhammad Yunas. Furthermore, I take a close look at how location may contribute to a "social entrepreneurial-ready" environment by honing in on the case of Mexico's social and economic instability. I also use the case of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, along with two acknowledged social entrepreneurs sponsored by Ashoka to demonstrate the organizational structure and the collaborative efforts necessary for the success of these social entrepreneurial projects. I conclude by considering the potential challenges for social entrepreneurs and the necessity for further support of SEs.
