Thesis (M.A.)--Webster University, 2013.
Historically, research studies as well as theoretical literature have supported the development and maintenance of positive parent-teacher relationships of school-aged children. While these studies have collectively established the efficacy of such relationships, little research has been done to examine the mindset of the teachers who must build and sustain connections with parents and the barriers that exist in creating parent-teacher partnerships. This literature review not only summarizes and categorizes the existing research that supports positive parent-teacher relationships, but further explores the causes of parent-teacher discord and strategies to improve parent-teacher relationships. The roots of parent-teacher conflict are grouped into five categories---historic, cultural, systemic, pre-professional, and personal. Responses and approaches to these causes are further evaluated, highlighting a range of tactics intended to repair parent-teacher discord and stimulate collaborative parent-teacher relationships. This thesis concludes with a proposal for an original investigation that further gives voice to educators who oust implement the steps towards developing such interpersonal connections.
