Speech rhythms of speakers with aphasia were recorded and analyzed during episodes of conversational repair. Conversational repairs were defined as moments when there is a problem or need for clarification with the expression or comprehension of a verbal exchange between conversational partners. Speech rhythms were classified as fluctuations in fundamental frequency and intensity and were depicted with sine waves overlaid on graphic displays of pitch and intensity tracings during episodes of conversational repair. Analysis of the pre to post repair changes in speech rhythms yielded results that suggest that speakers with aphasia respond differently during conversational repairs with familiar and unfamiliar partners, whereas non-disordered speakers respond based on whether the repair is self-initiated or other-initiated. Additionally the speakers with aphasia tended to be more successful in resolving the problems intelligibly when they slowed down their speech rhythm during the repair. Clinical implications are discussed.
